CURRENT THEME  4v1.1               RETIRED THEME LEGACY

Branded CMS templates are designed to provide flexibility for customizing the layout of content.  Using these templates and stylesheets aid departments and other units of NMSU in ensuring that their websites, as well as web and mobile application development, will be closely tied in visual aesthetics. This helps to create a cohesive overall institutional web presence.

To make it easier for our web presence to remain consistent, NMSU adopted Bootstrap for our web style framework in 2013. The Legacy Cascade CMS theme and Inside NMSU WordPress theme utilize Bootstrap 3. Bootstrap Developers have moved Bootstrap 3 to end of life, and it will no longer receive critical security updates. We will continue to host Bootstrap 3 styles sheets but will not provide updates to brand styles or provide further maintenance to adapt to changes and updates in browser or operating systems.

The new NMSU templates are based on Bootstrap 4 and generally follow Bootstrap HTML and CSS conventions, with some additions and modifications. The components and JavaScript plugins available in Bootstrap are available in master brand template packages. In addition, several third-party and premium plugin libraries are available.

For Web Developers

Developers developing sites for NMSU should become familiar with Bootstrap conventions and components to better understand the foundations of NMSU's template.

Feature Sheets

The new theme includes a new feature sheet that presents new design elements under NMSU's brand identity program. We have provided several layout examples and demo pages within the CMS that integrate components and plugin libraries for inspiration.

We have released an extensive documentation site that details components, utilities, and libraries. In addition, we have released a code snippet collection of elements and combined components. Many of these elements you will find in the theme 4v1.1 demo and "quick add" page assets in the CMS. You can use the copy-to-clipboard feature and build everything from fully designed website for your own web development projects or use code blocks in CMS pages.

For legacy theme users, additional examples of CSS Grid markup and several components are available on Bootstrap's site.

Other Templates

As part of the branding transition project, we have introduced a stand-alone option for users who would like to feature their content in a news or blog format. Based off the same core functionality of the news and events modules in the legacy theme, the new and improved news template offers a modern, responsive, and fully-functional newsroom. News Sites should be used to collect and capture news stories not published in the official NMSU Newsroom. They are also the recommended place to publish event calendars or publications.

Inside NMSU

"Inside" sites utilize the WordPress platform and require authentication (login) for access. They are typically used to present content only to internal audiences. View WordPress Theme feature sheet.

Usage Guidelines

The web templates are authorized ONLY for use by official NMSU entities and organizations. Any other usage of code or images contained within the template packages is in violation of copyright. View NMSU Copyright Statement.

To ensure we have a unified web presence and consistent branding, we require that all sites and applications based on the templates include the institutional identifier in the header and follow the guidelines for content provided in the web governance standards for NMSU and associated web standards and guidelines,  and standard oprating procedures relating to the use and maintenance of NMSU websites.

Please refrain from closely mimicking the layout and content of the NMSU home page to preserve its unique identity as the main online entry point for our institution. The templates provide multiple layout options and are designed to be flexible to meet your needs. We encourage creativity while following our web standards and guidelines.
